Plants for upgrading to biomethane with Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology

To obtain biomethane efficiently and with respect for the environment

To obtain biomethane efficiently and with respect for the environment

The purification of biomethane with the use of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology is a simple concept: the biogas is compressed to a few bar, fed through an active carbon filter that eliminates sulphur compounds and other trace gases, and then is cooled to remove moisture.

The biogas that has undergone this treatment is made to flow through carbon molecular sieves that can capture, thanks to the chemical/physical phenomenon of adsorption, the carbon dioxide and part of the trace gases that the biogas contains (oxygen, nitrogen, as well as water vapour) and let methane through. This is how biomethane is obtained from biogas; biomethane has the same features as natural gas.

To guarantee a continuous process, the production is divided between several adsorbers which operate in sequence.

The adsorbers are then completely regenerated with a vacuum pump, which releases the waste gas from the molecular sieve. A system for the continuous analysis of gas quality guarantees compliance with legal parameters and, together with the automation system, helps the plant operate continuously and efficiently.

The upgrading plants have a processing capacity ranging from 250 to 3,000 Sm³/h of ingoing biogas. They are therefore extremely flexible and easily adaptable to the production of your plant.

The benefits at a glance

  • Low electricity self-consumption and no thermal self-consumption
  • There is no process water to dispose of or to recondition
  • No waste water
  • No need for toxic chemical products to manage and dispose of
  • No need to replace the adsorbers
